unique permissions

First: I'm following instructions in article 825451 to add unique
permissions to subsite. At this point I want to have one user name/password
to give to a group of people for an ad hoc subsite. On page 3, method 1, step
7, I don't understand when it says to "either create a new account or add an
existing user account." What exactly [in laymen's terms] am I being asked to
do?

Second: Later I may want to add multiple users to a permanent subsite and
understand I'll need to set up a database file. Can you point me to the
articles that tell me how to do that. I don't have MS Access - can I set up
the database file in FP?

You will either need to have your web host create an account for you (and
then give that account permissions to the sub site) or, if they allow you to
do this yourself (ex: via a hosting control panel) then you will need to
create a user account first.

It may be possible to create an account for your user with the FrontPage
extensions, provided your host has given you the administration rights
to do so.

In FrontPage, with the subweb open, Tools->Server->Permissions
This opens a web page in IE, which allows you to turn off anonymous
access, and add users and roles for the user. Some hosts enable this
feature, many don't.
Don't forget to make sure that *you* are included among the users for
the subweb.

If this feature is not available, then follow David's advice.

Ronx, thanks for the info. I did get as far as that permissions web site, and
the host team told me that I could assign unique permissions to subsites. I
haven't gone further though because I'm afraid of making a mistake I can't
undo. You mention that I shouldn't forget that I am one of the users, which
means of course that I must add myself, but would that apply if I were to
just use one user name and password and make that available to our ad hoc
group? Does the account actually mean a specific computer? So sorry to appear
dense here, but I honestly don't know.

The account applies to a person (or group of people sharing the account
login), not to an individual computer.

I mention adding yourself because some people add users who can only
browse the web, then find that no-one can administer or edit the web, or
change the roles to get an administrator. If you make the group login
an administrator account then you can leave your self out, but I would
restrict it to authors or power-authors - these cannot create new users
and are restricted from other admin. tasks.

You would usually be in the list of users as an administrator anyway,
but be certain and check.
