Like WinNT and Win2K before it, WinXP's file security paradigm
doesn't rely on, or allow, the cumbersome method of password protection
for individual applications, files, or folders. Instead, it uses the
superior method of explicitly assigning file/folder permissions to
individual users and/or groups.

Of course, if you have WinXP Pro, you can encrypt the desired
files/folders.

As a crude work-around, you can place the file in a compressed
folder, and set a password to uncompress the folder to view/access its
contents. Also, some applications allow the user to password-protect
their specific data files. Read the specific application's Help files
for further information on this capability.

Try the freeware "Truecrypt".

Rather than protecting a folder, it protects a virtual disk (almost the
same) but once you mount the virtual drive with a password it works
transparently. It works on any version of Windows 2000/XP and provides
industrial strength protection.

Aside from the many 3rd part encryption tools, Microsoft did provide (and
you can still find it) a addon called "Microsoft Private Folder". What it
does is create a special folder on your desktop that is password protected.
Microsoft dropped the project when users complained they forgot their
password and could not retieve their files (HA-HA), as there is no repair
or retrieve tools. If you want to give it a try, do a web search for
"Microsoft Private Folder download" or try the urls below.
