Properties form desktop

I have suddenly developed a problem. When I right click on the desktop to
bring up the menu that includes "properties" Windows freezes up and I have to
"control alt delete" and use the tab there to restart the computer.
Otherwise everything on the computer seems to be working normally. I hope
someone can help me. Thanks
