Programs Won't Open

Dell laptop running XP Home edition with all the updates. One gig of memory.
Recently pulled off Symantec's antivirus and put on Microsoft's beta
programs of windows Defender and One Care. Both of these programs still run
and find no problems.

But I can only open a few programs. Word, IE, Outlook, System Restore, etc
just won't open, even if I go into the window's explorer and try to open
directly from the System32 folder. Any suggestions?

windows defender is not a nice program. It caused me endless grief a week
ago and so I unistalled it. I will not use it and would not recommend it to
anyone
