Programs will not start

I have had a HP laptop for 1 year and it came with windows xp home edition
on it.
Just recently, I have been unable to start any programs because startup gets
no further
than the windows xp screen and freezes.
Does anyone have an idea that I can use to correct the problem?

If you have an 'OS' disk (not 'recovery'), you could do a repair install.
