Programs popping open by themselves

Writing for my daughter who is having problems with WINXP.
Seems that her programs are popping open by themselves
randomly. They just keep popping open one after the other.
Has anyone else heard of this problem? Any help will be
appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the replies.

Chris...it's not pop up ads opening but actual programs,
like my computer wordperfect and other programs on the
computer.
Lloydll, she checked for a virus and it came up clean.
She used Norton, and the definitions are up to date.

Any other ideas???

Had this problem before... but was resolved by cleaning
up my system for spyware etc with Ad-Aware.
