My son and I both have Administrator accounts on XP and I notice that everything I download under my profile goes into his also. What do I have to do to stop this......so that things I download don't go into his account and vice versa, and so that if I delete something in my account, it doesn't delete from his too? Should I put us as Power Users, get us out of Administrator or what do I do? I'm brand new to XP and have no idea where most anything is still.

If you install programs, the those programs could be installed for "all
users". If you download files, saving them to the My Documents will place
them in your profile only. Own the individual 'Documents and Settings' are
stored in separate accounts.

You can't save them in C:\whatever? They have to be saved in My Documents?

I may have read this wrong the first time - so programs will be installed for all users no matter what I do, but files can be kept separate? I would like for programs to be kept separate too........what about if I download a program, tell it to save to My Documents, then click on install file and install it to one of my own folders? Will this also go to him?

You can try removing permissions for other people, so that only can you view
that folder. You should look at the help for permissions on files and
folders. When you do, you can right click on the folder, and go to
properties and you'll see things in there. Be careful though, I think you
can remove permission from yourself as well.

Me.

Well #1 if you are both admins on your machine, you both will have
unfettered access to any and everything on your hard drive unless you
explicitly deny permissions to another user/admin, just be careful playing
with permissions because as Miguel said you can remove permissions from
yourself, which is not a good thing. Most programs when installed with
default options will be installed with access to everyone, unless you
manually remove the other users' shortcuts (on their start menu etc.) and
deny their access to the program's folder. HTH

Right-click on the Start Button and select Explore all users

Programmers write "Help Files" for a reason. use them. You will find a
folder for each account ( Admin, All Users, You, Your son, and Default
User ). Simply move the icons from .../All Users/startup/ and ...All
Users/desktop/ to yours and your sons folder as needed. Any that you both
use can stay in .../All Users/.

Hopefully, Programmers will start programming for Multi-User systems
soon and you will be able to select whcih accounts to install to.
