When I click on my volume control in Win XP Professional, it drops to the
bottom toolbar and will not open up. When I right-click on it, the maximize
button is greyed out. How do I get this program open?

If you have a control center ICON for your speakers;
open it and go to OPTIONs/SETTINGs. See if there is a
setting to have VOLUME always shown on the TASK-BAR (by
the clock).
What sound card do you use?

In the TaskBar:
Left clicking the volume icon should bring up a slider.
Right clicking should bring up a menu (click RESTORE or
OPEN). This should open an advanced set pf sliders and
buttons.

If all else fails; go to Window's CONTROL PANEL > SOUNDs.
This should open the your Speakers' Control Center. If you
get into the dialog to set Sounds for Individual Win
Events, that's fun but not what you are looking for!
You should be able to have an ICON put in the TaskBar at
Win StartUp!
