Program shut down

B

Bishoop

I do contract work on a WinXP Pro system that is severely restricted by the
system administrator.

I use a program, Paint Shop Pro (PSP), that has a bug that causes it to
lockup rather frequently.

With restrictions imposed on WinXP I cannot open the Task Manager by right
clicking in the task bar and the Run option on the Start menu is not
available either.

The only way I know to clear the lockup is to power down the PC. When PSP
is locked up and I restart Windows in this manner, PSP does not recover the
autosaved data like it should.

Is there any other way I can possibly try to shut down PSP? I'm getting
tired of losing data.

No, the system administrator is no help at all.

Thanks in advance.

Contact the person in charge of the IT department explain
the situation to him/her and they will contact the admin
and make sure he understands that it is his problem and
needs to fix it. Any good IT department manger will tell
his employes that "I can't" or "not possible" or "you can
not" doesn't exist in there (IT's) vocabulary. It is there
obligation to support you. Now if you illegaly installed
the SW on your system and the company does not own the
License for Paint Shop Pro, then you will be fired. Now
any suggestions that we or I can give you is not going to
help if your system is locked down as tight as you say it
is. Download patches, updates and try to install them I
dought you will be able to.

Good Luck

Well said but I am not dealing with rational people in the IT department.

I could gone for hours writing about horror story after horror story but I
won't waste my time.

The software is perfectly legal, bought and installed by the IT dept. You
don't think they would have the system enabled where a user could install
any software do you?

Requesting help here was a shot in the dark. The only reason I'm even doing
the work is to help out a friend. I don't need the money.

Sorry to hear, the reason for locking it down is because
there is a fine of $150,000.00 for each non legal piece of
SW, companies do get audited by the SBA and can not
affored the fine, try downloading the latest patch and
install it, but I do not think you will not be able to
install it.
I would talk to your manager and see if it is possible for
him/her to speak to someone in IT to see if they are able
to help you, to get your job done.

Good Luck

Thanks Steve.

There is no patch available at this time. The PSP authors have confirmed
the bug no fix as yet.

Thanks Alex.

I've been "up the tree" and no help so far. I thought maybe there was
another way besides Task Manager to just shut down PSP without shutting down
the whole system.

Guess I'll just have to live with it til if and when JASC releases a patch
to solve the problem.

That's a thought. I don't know if compatibility mode is available to me or
not.

I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Thanks....

What version of Paint Shop Pro, and what's the bug?

There is a bug in PSP 8.10 that locks the program. It has been confirmed
that simultaneously depressing the left and right mouse buttons while
drawing a "line segment" line PSP locks. If I try to shut down using the X
in the upper right hand corner or File > Exit I get the "Image function in
progress" message and that's all.
All I have figured out to do so far is alt-ctrl-del which brings up an
option to shut down Windows, no Task Manager.

When I shut down Windows following the above and then restart, PSP does NOT
recover the image I was working on when the lockup occurred. All work since
the last "manual" save is lost. I have autosave enabled for every 5 minutes
to no avail under this failure mode..

The bug has been confirmed by JASC. Their reply is don't depress the mouse
buttons simultaneously. I don't do it intentionally, it happens when I'm
rolling a long and my right ring finger tenses up and fires the right mouse
button.

One of my co-workers suggested I tape my fingers together!

Any suggestion?

Compatibility mode has no beneficial affect.
