It was a problem under XP too. You created a limited account, and it
turned out that you were unable to start certain programs. So you
thought that limited accounts were worthless. I have been using XP
with an administrator account for years, and I have only recently
discovered how to use XP with a limited account, which is so much
safer.

Vista is worse.

Some programs, such as Agent (which I am using right now to enter a
message in the newsgroup) even cannot be started if you log on as
Admin. Of course you made sure that you had access rights to the Agent
files. But the program crashes immediately, without error message, and
you have no idea why.

Agent can be started (under any user account) by right clicking on it,
and selecting 'Run as Administrator'.

I do not believe Microsoft intended this.

Installing Paint Shop Pro 6. The splash sceen appears and does not
disappear.

Adobe Bridge will not work unless you have the user account control turned
off, so I keep it turned off in order to use Bridge. This occurs even if you
have it set to run as administrator.

Hello Mr. Evan

That is why Vista is a Beta to find problems with 3rd party software and anything else even if they are old

Am I supposed to buy every new version?

If you want compatibility with a cutting edge beta OS then yes, you
should have the latest version.

Reporting bugs in programs 5 years old isn't going to get you very far.
PSP 6 is *not* going to be fixed.

I don't think Microsoft cares much if there's a problem running a 5
year old program. Much like if I tried to install PSP X on Windows
3.11.

Thank you BeckyWC, your reply helped me get Bridge running. I almost
reinstalled an old Windows version so that I could use Bridge.

Now I find that I cannot not access other computers in my LAN with either
Bridge or Photoshop unless I map a network drive. Others might encounter this.

I am having the same issues with the following programs:
Corel Paint Shop Pro (PSP) X - Seems to install ok, but when I attempt to
run it, I get this message: "To start this application for the first time or
to activate it, log in using an administrator-level account." I am logged in
with an Administrator account (at least it's the only account on my PC. I did
a clean install of Vista using the defaults and under User Accounts it is
listed as an Administrator).

I also received a similiar message from Microsoft Money 2006. It opened ok,
but kept giving me error messages that said I had to be an administrator to
run the updates for the first time. I eventually ignored this message, left
Money open and running, and the updates installed anyway.

Instead of clicking on the icon, right-click on the icon and choose "Run as
Administrator." Vista and XP do not treat the word Administrator the same
when it regards user accounts.

Vista redefines Administrator. Go into properties\security for the programs
in question and set them to run as admin. then you will get the UAC bitch
box asking if you really do want to run this potentially dangerous software.
