Program Files folder switched to Pictures Folder type...

Hello All!

I don't know how this happened, but I didn't do it myself. For some reason,
my Program Files directory has been changed to the Photos directory type, so
it changed from the details like file type, size, etc., to rating, photo
size, etc. I cannot figure out how to change the directory back to a General
file folder type. The toolbar shows things like Slide Show, etc. The
sub-directories are all fine and appear as a General type. I'm running Vista
Ultimate 32-bit, without SP1.

How do I change the folder type back to General? I can't figure out how
with this single folder. It's driving me nuts.

Thanks in advance!

This tutorial will show you how to change the folder template back to
"All Items" again.

To stop Vista from changing the folder templates on you automatically,
you can do the "Disable Automatic Folder Type Discovery for Templates"
section in Method Two of this tutorial.

Hope this helps you,

Shawn,

First, the website you are referring me to is great. I'll use it in the
future. I ended up here because I'm of a technical level that when something
doesn't work right, the MS Knowledgebase is usually the home of the answer.
So, this was the quickest source of outside, non-charge info. So, thanks!

Anyways, in the root directory of my C: drive, which is my only partition
that I use, other than a D: recovery tools partition put in place by Dell, it
will let me select the Program Files directory, go to the properties page,
but there is NO customize folder tab (like everywhere else). Also, in the
root of the C: partition, if I go to the View menu, there is no Customize
This Folder option. If I select another directory in the root of the C:
drive, the Customize tab appears under folders. So, what has me stumped is
why this one folder does not have the normal tools for rectifying this
situation.

I hope this further clarifies my problem and I look forward to hearing from
you, or anyone, with help! Thanks again!

Jim,

Vista does this to protect the root directory. There is no way to get
the "Customize" tab to appear for these folders that I know of. Using
the workaround in the NOTE under step 1 in this tutorial is the only way
that I know of to change these folder templates.

You can also further change the columns and sorting order for these
folders using the methods in this tutorial.

Hope this helps,

Shawn,

I missed that note. After seeing that the Users directory was set to Music
Files and changing it to All Files (and applying it to all folders), I now
have the ability to "customize" the Program Files directory in all of the
ways I should have. I don't know how it happened in the first place (and
then what blocked the normal tools), but I'll be at the Vistax64 website for
any more of these issues that come up. I appreciate your fast and helpful
replies.

I hate to post to these groups, but sometimes you'll get someone who changes
your opinion about this.

Thanks again!
