Profiles won't load after reinstalling XP HE

It started out badly today and isn't improving yet.
I'm using XP Home, SPII (just prior to this problem. Now I'm probably on SP0)
After power down overnight, boot up started an infinite loop of rebooting.
It would hard reset just after the Windows logo showed up but way before the
profile icons loaded. I tried to safe mode it, no help. I tried pulling all
but minimal hardware out - no help. BIOS reports all memory good.
I finally broke out the CD and reinstalled. (I tried to repair but it
wouldn't accept my admin pw). Now at least I get to my user icons but when I
click on a profile it loads but immediately logs off back to the user logo
screen. Tried going in safe mode again, no help. I reloaded again, no help.
Now I'm just stumped.
Many thanks for ideas and strategies!

Sometimes memory checks OK to the BIOS but it isn't ok. Download memtest86+
(you can search for it) and get the floppy disk version. then, after you run
the install file, take the disk you just made and run it on the problem
computer. If you have 512MB, make sure memtest recognizes 512MB. let it run
passes for a few hours. Then, when you've verified it's not a memory issue,
boot to the Windows XP CD and perform a repair install.
