I was reading a post on this discussion that worried me. See, discussions and
anouncements, page 23, subject; Virus from (e-mail address removed), posted
8/15/05 by David, Replyed to by Bill Sanderson. My question is, my real email
address is listed in msn member directory, profile page for microsoft
communities
newsgroups, here in profile, and in msdm forums. Is this safe from possible
attacks, or should I use a ficticious email address.

Thanks Engel, I did not know that this was a danger until I read that paticular
thread.

I have 3 differant email addresses, 2 of which, I use and one of which I
never use,
but if I use the 3rd. one, would my reply notices to the posts that I have
posted as
threads go there also, because in that case, it would be hard to find the
answers to
my questions from my threads.?

Hi Diana,

I don't want to suggest anything about this subject, because I never make
public my address, maybe somebody with experience in the subject can guide
you better.

I can suggest you, tu keep your antivirus, anti spyware programs, and any
other program like Java http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp up today,
and all the security patches de MS

You are posting here essentially anonymously--your true email address is
protected by the passport system.

You are more anonymous than I am--my true main email address, which I've had
for many years, is a portion of what I use as a posting address here.

As to the question about the profiles--that's something I don't know
about--I post exclusively via either NNTP or the Microsoft HTML interfaces
into these groups.

I have licenced, and up-to-date softwares, Error nuker, and Trend Micro . Also,
have WOC and MSAS. All 4 of these are set to scan automatically at specifyed
times. Also, I have Microsoft Baseline Security which scans my pc once every
other week. And twice a month I go to my Windows live web page , which has
a link to WOC Online, where I have a full service scan done. The last scan
was
done 3 days ago, and came up green and clean in all 4 parts of the scan. I
try
to be causios, because I don't know a lot about pc security issues, so I
depend
on my software to protect me. But, as far as online security, I know
practically
nothing.

When this artical speaks of password policy, it means net passport, right?
I am the only user on all 3 of my pc's. If I am the only user profile, then
is
a password nessary on my desktops?

In this artical it talks about creating a new reg word, I am lost, I don't
know what
a reg word is. Can you explain it to me?

I have to be honest, I cannot follow instructions on most of this page, support
microsoft.com , without help, because I have no idea what they are talking
about. It says navigate to a registery key. I know the regrestry is windows
registery, but I don't know how to go there. What does the word,
Alphanumeric Windows, mean? And what is Binary value, I don't know what
that means either. I hope you don't think that I am not very smart. There is
some things on my computer that I am very good at, but others, like this, I
one, I am lost.

Hi Engel,

This artical is much easier to understand. It explains things more on my
level.
Thank you for being so patient with me. I am trying to learn about security, I
just need to start at a level that I can understand.

Binary humor
"Binary is as easy as 1, 10, 11."
"There are 10 kinds of people in the world - those who understand binary
numbers, and those who don't."

(I'm in the second clasification :) )

OK, now I don't feel so bad about not knowing these things, I did get a kick
out of your statement, ( for safty stay away from the regestery ) You don't
know how true that is. Untill I learn more about what I am doing in that
area, The registery is better off if I leave it alone. But, I'm learning.

You are posting here via the HTML system--all users of that system are
protected--so yes--it is OK and safe the way you are doing it.
