FP discussion web -- no submission form but new posts appear.

Stan Hilliard

I get a lot of unwanted advertisements on my FP discussion web. When
the message submit page is disabled messages still get posted -- about
15 per day.

Can I assume that a web crawler is posting the messages? If so, is
there a way that I can identify and block the specific crawler? I
don't want to block all crawlers because I want the pages to be found
by google.

The forum is:
http://www.samplingplans.com/forum/forum.htm

At this time, messages can be entered into the submission form but
they can't actually be posted and do not show in the TOC.

How can I attack this problem?

You would have to check the server log file for the IP address, and then ask your web host to block
the IP. Some web host may not be willing to do this.

You might consider using a forum that has a databse and uses a server side
language. It is usually a lot easier to control spam with this type of
situation - plus you can have moderators as well to delete unwanted messages.

Thanks for the advice, Tom and Corey.

I have installed a phpBB forum and am in the process of configuring
it. I want to close my FP discussion to all new posts but leave it on
line.

I have made several attempts to block all posts but spam posts still
appear. They are advertisements with links to pharmaceutical sites,
porn sites, etc. I have removed the links to disc1sam_post.htm but
that did not help. I then disabled the [Post] button on
disc1sam_post.htm. That did not help either.

The log files on the server show POST events that call
/forum/_vti_bin/shtml.dll.

/forum/ is the sub web that contains the discussion and it does not
contain _vti_bin/shtml.dll. (at least the FIND does not find it.)

I cannot find shtml.dll on my provider's server as I do not know where
to look,

On my local computer there is a shtml.dll in.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server
Extensions\40\_vti_bin\SHTML.DLL

Version=4.0.2.2712
Datetime=3/19/99 9:06:42 PM
Product=Frontpage 2000
Size=16,437 bytes

What further things can I do to prevent all posts to the FP
discussion?

Advice will be appreciated,
Stan Hilliard

chances are your posting URL has gone out to hundreds of spammers and they
just enter some information and that's it.

I have not used the FP forum in such a long time. But when I went to your
site, I did not see a link to post a new thread - which leads me to beleive
the statement above.

Can you delete the posting URL as well on your site and just leave the
threads?

I renamed disc1sam_post.htm (without letting the hyperlinks follow
it.)

It has been 24 hours and no spam. That is unusual. I think that fixed
it.
