I started playing with roaming profiles and got a couple users confused
between their profiles on the local machine and their roaming profiles.

First, this is a new install of 2000 server and new installs of 2000 pro
workstations that has not rolled out yet, so I can delete files, delete
users and start again, anyting to get this right.

I created a user jsmith without a roaming profile. Logged him into a couple
of workstations and messed around with wallpaper. Went back to another
machine and noticed the wallpaper didnt travel. Thats when I learned about
roaming profiles so I set that up.

Now when I login to workstations I see the wallpaper for a second and then
it disapperars and the desktop color is only shown. I go into desktop
properties and it won't let me change the wallpaper. When I logout I get a
quick flash of the old wallpaper.

I am assuming I have some confusion between the profile saved on the local
computer and the one saved on the server. Is there a way to fix this? Can I
just delete the profiles on the local computer?

Not knowing everything that's happened here, and since you indicated that
you could remove those, I would probably either rename or delete them and
start clean. The following article will help I hope, but it is generally a
fairly straight forward process in setting them up. The roaming profile
isn't actually created though Until the initial user logs off, at which time
it should write the profile up to the share you've created making it
available for logons elsewhere. You probably already know this, but it will
also write a local copy on that machine as well to use in case the roaming
profile (or the server its on) isn't available (a policy can delete these
local ones if desired).
Verify that when the roaming is set up and you've logged off, that you see
the info written into the profile share. If not check both share and ntfs
permissions to be sure the user has FC on their stuff, and that they are
able to at least browse to that share.

I can delete the user jsmith, delete their profile files on the server but I
need to recreate the user jsmith. I dont want to rename the user to j_smith
or anything else, it won't fit our naming style.

When I log jsmith into a workstation after recreating him the behaviour
persists. Can I delete the local profiles on the workstation too? What
files do I delete?

Thanks,
Andrew

My apologies, as I wasn't as clear as I should have been. When I said to
rename or delete them, I meant the Local Profiles on the clients so that the
system couldn't load them, not the actual user account.
You can continue testing with jsmiith, or create a new test user account
called "test" etc (very original <g>). However if you want to continue
testing with jsmith, then you will want to rename/delete the local profiles
on those machines so they can't load. Since it is loading those, it appears
that the roaming ones may not be getting created, so be sure and check those
things in the earlier post. If you see it create a roaming profile in the
share, and want to test it to be sure, then make some change to it like
adding a txt doc to the desktop etc, logoff, logon as admin and
delete/rename the local one, and then logon again as that user and see if
you get the change. If you do then it is working ok since the only location
it could have come from is the roaming.

Now I have tested everything with different users and I am thinking I have a
different problem.

Profiles seem to be roaming fine. I got rid of any local profiles. I did
the test.txt procedure. Everything is normal.

One user and only one user is having trouble only with wallpaper. Here is
what happened on machine A, jsmith had a " " wallpaper setting and on
machine "B" he had a no wallpaper set. I configured this user for roaming
profile and logged into machine "B" and set the wallpaper to " "

Now when I login the user and I get a splash of the " " wallpaper while the
login is completing and then it disappears and the apperance colour blue is
only shown. When I log the user out I get a brief splash of the same
wallpaper while the system is shutting down. On top of this if I go into
desktop properties and try and change the wallpaper it says its set to none.
I try to change it to something else but when I press apply, the apply
button grays out and nothing happens on the desktop.

I have a wallpaper error related to this users profile. Any way to reset
it?

Got it.
I deleted all local profiles on all machines.
Deleted the files in the profiles directory on the server for that user.
and I deleted the user and receated him.

One or all of these fixed it.

Thanks
