Product Key!!!

I need to buy a new product key. The story goes is that we bought our PC part
from Best Buy. We bought the one off the sales floor. Now we are having to
activate our Windows vista. But I tried doing the phone thing and it didnt
work. I had entered the product key that we have and it tells me its already
in use. Im using the same product key for the same computer. But I will just
buy a new product key. Please tell me how I would buy a new product key on
the website?

Maybe the following article will offer some ideas:

(931573) You may be prompted to activate
Windows Vista on a computer on which Windows
Vista was already activated by a Volume License
or OEM installation

Ok let me digest this.

You bought some hardware for you PC and replaced it.

Now Vista sees the hardware change and wants activation again.

It doesn't like you and would like you to beg Microsoft's permission to
continue using your computer.

And you are actually *willing* to PAY them for it?

I mean come on! That's ridiculous. You already have a valid license, why
would you want to pay for another one?

I'd get back on the phone...

Use the phone activation and wait until a real person, not a recording,
comes on and they will activate your copy for you. There's no need to
pay twice for the same thing.

You probably should take the computer back and demand another one.
Someone may have stolen the key from your computer, if it was on a sticker
on the case.
Or, you can try the telephone option again, but stay on the line until you
get to talk to someone.

Thank you Stephan, for a well thought out response - one that doesn't
suggest switching, as posts from another individual invariably do.

Even though you use an alternative operating system, **YOU** do actually
assist in this news group.

Again, thank you for your sensitivity and assistance.

No, it's a flaw in the ineffective activation program that only serves
to frustrate paying customers and does nothing to stop piracy.

Yep, that's what the OP should do.

Just curious, but how could you tell Stephan used a different operating
system? I can't tell what it is. Can you somehow get that information
from the email Stephan sent or do you just know from previous posts?

Thanks.

No problem Richard, I do try to help where I can. Even if it's Vista
related.

I may not have a lot of love for Vista (ok that's an understatement) but I
still am a programmer for a living and still need to support it. =)

Well for one he does know from previous posts what I use as an operating
system, but still you can "sort of" tell by looking at the news headers.

If you look at my news headers, you'll see a line like this:

User-Agent: pan 0.120 (Plate of Shrimp)

That is the news reader I am using: Pan version 0.120

So if you know your way around news readers a little, you might know that
Pan is a linux based news reader, so for me to be using it, I have to be
running Linux. Slrn is another common linux newsreader for those who
prefer command-line based readers.

If someone is using Outlook Express or Agent for example, then it's
obvious they are using Windows as those are windows-only news readers.
X-News is another one that is windows only I think.

If someone is using Thunderbird then, if I remember correctly, Thunderbird
includes the OS in the Agent name. So there it's explicitly stated I think.

Any other news readers though it may be difficult to tell if you don't
specifically know what OS the reader comes from or if the reader is
available for multiple OS' but does not state the OS it is being used from.

Because in the headers he is using the Pan newsreader which is what most
Linux people use for Usenet. There is a Windows version of Pan now too
though but I highly doubt most Windows users bother using it.

Hi Chet.

I can tell you are using Windows Mail to post to the group probably from
Windows Vista. If I look in your headers, I see this line:

Xnewsreader: Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6000.16480

Look at this line in the headers. That's how you tell.

I use it on Win XP machines, 4 of them to be exact, but not my main work
machines (also Win XP). It has issues with threading and it's not the
same on Linux. You are correct that most windows users won't have a clue
about installing and using it.

What is wrong with his statement about most windows users not having a clue
about installing Pan? Isn't the reason most people who visit here are
novices? Now on the other hand he might be a blowhard, but that's another
subject!

Anyone saying THEY KNOW what "most users" do, want, have, is utter BS.
No way to know. Anyone claiming same is a blowhard. Period. Ever since

You do not need to buy a new product key. You did not stay on the telephone
long enough.

Use the telephone option again and when the activation fails, stay on the
line and a representative will answer. Tell them what happened and they will
activate the system for you.
