I just need to purchase new product key.

To purchase a product Key for Vista you will need to purchase a VISTA Suite when available from a retail outlet later this month.
Or purchase a subscription to MSDN

Does that mean the option to buy online directly from Microsoft will not be
available as it is now with Windows XP - should you happen to have a copy of
Windows that Microsoft does not deem genuine?

There are specific conditions for the genuine Windows program.

The price of Vista is for the product key since the media kit is pretty
irrelevant once you have either a dvd or an image. I installed my retail
Vista Ultimate x64 with the product key Microsoft Connect gave me for my
TechBeta participation and an MSDN .iso image I downloaded. I never
bothered to download the Connect image.

So do you reckon that if you already have an image (not that i have ..cough
cough, but I'm keen to do the right thing) that it will be possible to buy
the key online direct from Microsoft? Much more convenient than going to the
shops. Guess time will tell in about 13 days!

Personally i'd rather have the genuine disks in my posession here at home
instead of just the key. But thats just me.

Doesn't bother me whether or not I ever have the media kit. I would just
copy the dvd's and use the copies for my installations anyway. I have been
using slipstreamed copies of XP since SP1 released not only for installs but
also for running system file checker and other tasks.

Marco, I don't know if anyone cares where you get the dvd for Vista Gold.
But the cost of a product key is simply the price of the retail box anyway.
You might as well buy the retail box when it goes on sale. According to a
recent article by Mary Jo Foley, if you buy Ultimate (I assume full edition)
you can then use Anytime Upgrade to purchase one or two additional licenses
at a fraction of the full retail cost.

That is my intention. Also I understand that any edition can be installed
from one DVD. Does that mean the retailer will issue the key seperate from
the box or will he have lots of identical boxes in the shop with different
edition keys inside? Just curious.
The more I use Vista the more I like it. My "trial" edition has expired now
and I can't be bothered messing around with cracks and although expensive, I
reckon it's still worth paying the $$$. 12 days and counting.

I like the sound of the Anytime Upgrade you mention. That'll be good when I
get another PC later for my kid.

Lots of different boxes with different product keys and different dvd labels
all on dvds that are all the same :)
