Product Key not working

G

GanioC

I just got a new HP Laptop for Christmas and Windows Vista was pre-installed.
When I go onto Microsoft Word Vista, it tells me that I need to enter a
product key. On the under side of my laptop, there is a sticker for Microsoft
and it has a 25 character product key but when I enter it on Microsoft Word,
it tells me that it is invalid. I tried entering it five times and it doesnt
work. What am I doing wrong and why wont this work?

There is NO such thing as Microsoft Word Vista!

The Operating syatem is Vista; and Word is part of Microsoft Office, a
business application.
The Product Key on your computer does not apply to Word-Office.

What you have on your computer is a Trial version of Microsoft Office, which
includes Word, unless you specifically ordered Office when you ordered your
computer.
Look through the Media Disks that came with your comp for Office product
key, or buy a product key.

First of all, there is no such thing as "Microsoft Word Vista."
"Windows Vista" is the operating system. "Word" is a word-processing
application that is purchased and installed separately.

Secondly, the Product Key on the label affixed to the laptop is that of
Windows Vista. It cannot be expected to work for Word.

To obtain a Wird Product Key, look on the packaging that contains the
Word installation media. If you have a trial version of Word or Office
that came with the new computer, you'll have to purchase a full version
to obtain the Product Key.

No, that product key is for your Windows Vista operating system which is
different from Microsoft Word product. It sounds like you have a trial of
Microsoft Word that has expired and you need to purchase a license to turn
it into a full working copy of the product.

As it's new the sales blurb should say whether Word is part
of the package, or just a trial version.
If the blurb/advertising/spec says it includes Word and
does not mention it's a trial, or any conditions, then
contact the vendor if local, or HP's customer support.
Even if it is a trial you are entitled to run it for the
specified trial period.
Though sold as new it is possible that it is ex-demo
and the vendor activated the trial, which is now,
date expired, and it's asking for a new (purchased)
key.

When I go onto Microsoft Word Vista,

There's no such thing. Vista is an operating system and Microsoft Word
is an application. Word can be bought either by itself, or as part of
Microsoft Office, but it is completely separate from, and has nothing
to do with Vista. In your case, your computer came bundled with *both*
products--Vista and Word.

it tells me that I need to enter a
product key. On the under side of my laptop, there is a sticker for Microsoft

On the underside of your laptop, there is a sticker for Microsoft
Windows *Vista*, not for everything Microsoft.

Indeed it is. You are entering a Vista key into Microsoft Word. That's
like trying to start your Ford with a Chevrolet key.

I tried entering it five times and it doesnt
work. What am I doing wrong and why wont this work?

You're using the wrong key. You need to check the CDs and
documentation that came with the computer and find the correct key for
*Word*. If necessary, call HP and ask them where to find the key.

Most likely you have a trial version of Word. To get a product key you
must purchase a license. Word is not part of Vista itself so the
product key on the sticker won't work.

Any Product Key attached to the computer will be that of Vista, not
Office or Word.

It sounds as if you had an evaluation copy of Office or Word
installed. There will have been instructions on how to purchase a full
license and use it's Product Key to upgrade and activate that evaluation
license. Look in the documentation that came with the computer.

The number that's attached to the case of the computer is the Product Key
for the Operating System (Vista, in this case.) The product key for MS Word
is a different number. MS Word does not ship with Vista. If you purchased
MS Word alone or as part of MS Office you should have a Key that came with
that software.
