I am a student and when I try to work on documents I continue to get the
message to enter an product key code. When I entered the one from the back
of my laptop it says it is invalid. Nothing can be found on the box, the
sleeve, the cd cover.
Please help, I have assignments to finish and turn in!

Because that's the WINDOWS product key not the WORD (or Office) product key.
If you bought the copy of Office (or Word) then the product key WILL be on
the jewel case somewhere. If you didn't buy it, how did you come by it? was
it pre-installed? If so is it a trial version?

The key code on the base of your laptop is for the operating system, NOT the
office suite.

If you have the trial MS Office installed, the trial period is now over and
you will have to pay for the suite if you want to continue to use it

OR

go to www.openoffice.org and download the free open source Open Office suite
which will give you compatibility with MS Office documents

It would be my guess that you are using an app like Word, from the Office,
or Works Suites. These have Product Keys of their own, and are usually on
the container for the reinstall disk. (Sometimes this is an 'applications'
disk in the set of system disks.)
If you cannot find the Key, you are going to have to save all your data, and
restore the system to 'factory defaults' to get that Key installed from the
original setup (assuming the app was part of the preinstalled system). My
way to do that would be to use the Windows Live 'Sky Drive' storage.

Thanks for responding so quickly. The laptop was given to me as a part of
vocational rehab from the government. I picked up the box and that's it. I
used the word previously and this time around it won't let me work on my
documents unless I enter a code...do I have to contact Toshiba?

No. You have to purchase the full MS Office or download Open Office if you
do not have the funds to purchase MS Office..

Hi All,

I wish there was an easier way to do this! I wanted to do my homework on my
trip and now, it might not happen (the trip)! I'll try these suggestions out
and see which one allows me to use Word.

Thanks,

Your first point of contact should be whoever supplied you with the laptop.,
to see if they installed Office or if it came preinstalled when they
received the laptop from the manufacturer.
If they installed it then they will have to give you a product key for
Office.
It it came preinstalled then the product key should have been in the
original documentation - and if this is missing then again the person that
supplied you with the laptop should be contacted first to see where it is,
then the OEM like Toshiba etc.

The one(s) about spending some of your cold hard cash will be all that
will work.

You can still do that much (assuming the trip is not overly long).
Uninstall Office (it will not delete any docs) and download and install a
trial copy of Office 2007.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/default.aspx
As you can see from this page, you get a 60-day trial period. All the
suites are fully functional during the trial.

Computer manufacturers often install a trial version of Microsoft Office.
If you are getting a prompt to type in a Product Key when opening a Microsoft
Office program, it is likely the trial period is over and you'll need to
purchase a
license (product key) for Microsoft Office.

The product key affixed to your computer is for Windows Vista (the operating
system)
and not for Microsoft Office.
