First off - of the two service packs for Windows XP - you only need SP2.. It
includes SP1 and every patch released after SP1 and up to SP2. Then you
will need to get the 39+ patches after SP2 was released as well.

Secondly - are you sure the key that was used (is in use) to install Windows
XP is the one that came with your Windows XP CD?

Use one of these to get the installed key:

Belarc Advisor

Magical JellyBean Keyfinder v1.5B3

- Is your Windows XP CD an OEM or Retail version? (Boxed or is there a
sticker on your PC?)

If you are trying to install a WinXP Service Pack and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q326904

You need to purchase and a _legitimate_ retail or OEM full license
of WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CDs and Product Keys.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

You should also report whomever sold you this license to your local
law enforcement agencies; you've been defrauded.

No, there's no registry key to edit. And if the "product" for which you
paid wasn't legitimate, to start with, you've no option but to purchase
a legitimate license. Or use a different OS.
