Tami,
If you purchased a Computer with XP pre-installed by the Manufacturer [i.e.,
Dell, Gateway, Sony, HP, Compaq, e-Machines, etc,], they are required by
Microsoft to put the ID number on a label affixed to the case. I believe you
find it on the side of a Desktop and on the bottom of a Notebook/Laptop. The
ID is 25 alpha/numeric characters long with each five characters separated
by an ampersand [-].

Thanks for responding. We purchased XP and loaded
ourselves. The computer is not completely booting up and
we want the product number to call Microsoft for the
support

it will be on the CD case or with the documentation that
came with the CD

To boot off CD if this is still an option make sure that the
CD drive is listed as a boot device in the BIOS, normally as
1st boot device

Tami,
If you purchased a retail version, then that Product Key is contained on a
Label [probably a shade of orange] on the back of the CD Case and/or CD
Envelope. You had to enter this Key when you loaded/installed XP. If you
kept this case/envelope, as you should have, then look and you will find it
there.

It's not the Product Key that Tami wants, it's the Product ID. The former is
used for installing, the latter (shown on the general tab of system
properties) is used for support issues. They are two distinctly different
things.

Incidentally, I don't know of any way of accessing the PID without accessing
the system.

Have you tried booting into safe mode? At the Windows XP splash screen
with the green or blue horizontal scrolling bar, press the F8 key. If
this does work to help your computer boot all the way, download and run
belarc, and it will give you your product ID. Good luck.

Tammi will not be able to download and install Belarc if the machine won't
boot up, you would have to be running and able to get on the internet for
that.

This would be why I suggested the OP try booting into safe mode (with
networking, if necessary) to get there first. The OP could also
download belarc on another machine and burn it to CD if required to boot
into safe mode w/out networking.
