Processor Speed

What is the slowest speed processor Windows XP Professional will run on
without problems? I have a three Dell computers, Pentium 400, 450, 500, and
would like to install XP on them if possible. They are more than enough for
what I use them for, but I want to upgrade to a better OS.

P.S. Remember, you need an individual Windows XP license for
each installation on a different computer.

They are all adequate for Windows XP. They will all be on the slow side, but
they will work.

More important than the CPU speed is how much RAM you have. Unless these
machines have at least 256MB, or you are willing to upgrade to 256MB, don't
even consider putting XP on them.

Computers with processor speeds such as those you state, likely came
preinstalled with Windows 95 (maybe Windows 98 original edition). Computers
such as these will have all sorts of hardware compatibility problems. There
will also be bios issues that may not be corrected - even with a bios
upgrade.

Then there is the RAM issue. Many Windows 95/98 computers were delivered
with only 32 meg of RAM. You need 256 minimum to have an enjoyable Windows
XP experience. Your hard drive is going to be extremely small, and slow.

Then there are the Windows XP driver issues. Can you get XP drivers for all
of the hardware in said computers? Likely NOT.

More likely to be WinME/Win2000 systems than Win95/98, it goes farther back
than you think. My first 98 system was on an AMD K6 333Mhz, and that was
pretty decent for the time. The 400-500Mhz range wasn't too common for home
users until close to the end of 1998 and into 1999. Still probably short on
ram though, and we all know that with XP, it's "the more the merrier".
Definitely would want to check for driver support on the hardware, but
likely most of it will be supported out of the box as driver development for
XP occurred in 2000-2001, not too long after those processors became
commonplace.

The one I want to upgrade, and it's probably only one, is the Pentium 450,
384mb memory, currently running Win98, but I know will run 2000 pro since i
am running that on the Pentium 400. As for drivers, I think the video and
sound should be Ok. I'll need to check with Dell on that. The printer is
Ok, but probably not the scanner. What else could I be missing? Doesn't
dell run a diag on systems to tell you if they can be upgraded?

What about the XP Upgrade Advisor?
Really, with backup needs and DVD-R 16X/CD-R 52X burners, you need 1.6 Ghz or
better.
