Processor running at 100% randomly

Hello all,

I have an intermittent problem that is really getting on my nerves. From
time to time, even when I have no programs running my processor will run at
100% essentially stopping everything on my pc until it catches up. This
happens even when I have no programs running at all except the OS. I have
disabled all the start up items using msconfig, made sure there is nothing
in the startup folder, used taskmanager to monitor the system. Virus
checked (clean) run adaware and other programs to cover that angle, defraged
etc etc. Pulling my hair out. Would prefer not to format but seems like
the only option at the moment.

When it happens everything comes to a halt.... right down to mouse
movements, until such time as the processor catches up.

Have XP Pro, AMD 2000+, 384 ram, all in one motherboard. Bit suss about
video performance but dont think that is it.

Any suggestions.

Regards

Greg
