My pc is running very slow. I have anywhere from 50 to 60 processess running in the back ground. As I go to Task Manager I try to delete them but a message comes up that my system may become unstable should I delete them
Should I ignore the message and delete the process trees. Should it bcome unstable I believe that I could go to a restore point

Go to System Restore and find a date when your system did not have all those
processes.

David,

Your best bet is to get familiar with what the processes are for. All
running programs will be listed in Msconfig/Startup and Msinfo32.

Kelly,

How do you identify startup on Windows 2000 since there is no msconfig
option?

Hi Ron,

I don't have W2K installed right now to answer that, nor have worked within
that OS to any extent. I would first suggest using/reading the boot log.

The log is kept in the %SystemRoot% directory (normally C:\WINNT) in a file
called NTBTLOG.TXT.

To verify if it is activated: Reboot and press F8 and highlight Enable Boot
Logging. Press enter and continue booting.

Good luck!

Or perhaps going to HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run or HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run in the registry. It should hold the values of the startup items that msconfig would reveal

That would be great advice, if all running processes were listed there.

Not too sure if W2k has it, but running tasklist in a command prompt may reveal some. Tasklist /svc wil show whats in the svchosts. Usually msinfo32 has a list of running tasks.
Worst comes to worst you can copy msconfig from an XP machine adn paste it into W2k. It have run it succesfully on a few test machines at work.
