Problems with Windows XP Upgrade

Geoff Aldrich

Hello,
Yesterday, I upgraded my sister's computer (a Gateway PC with an 800 MHz
AMD Athlon and 384MB of RAM) from Windows ME to Windows XP Home Edition.
However, we are experiencing some oddness, which I was hoping someone
here could help us with.

First, we had tweaked her computer to "auto-login" under Windows ME and
I forgot to disable that before the upgrade, so XP also auto-logins.
I'd like to disable that now because when the computer auto-logs in,
some of the icons for programs that are supposed to be in the
notification area are missing, even though they are running. Most
notably, the instant messaging app Trillian.

Second, I am having a problem trying to install her HP CD-Writer+ 7510e
external parallel port cd burner (don't laugh!) I downloaded the driver
from HP and read the instructions and tried to install it, but in the
device manager the icon next to the SCM PPort ATAPI Adapter (which is
the phantom adapter installed to support the parallel port) has a little
yellow exclamation mark next to it, and the device manager shows an
error code 31.

If anyone could help me, I would be very appreciative.

Thanks in advance.

In XP, Start - Run the line
control userpasswords2
username' and OK.

Now in Control Panel - User accounts, take 'change the way user log on,
and make sure it is on Welcome screen.

I am not at all sure though that this relates to the missing icons.
unless your tweak was done in some manner that is not in fact an
autologon, but restarts explorer.exe once the system is booted (which
would result in the symptom) - in which case you will have to track down
what is causing that.

It may be getting at cross purposes with some other service relating to
CD burning. I suggest:

Uninstall it, in Dev manager, highlight and take Action - Uninstall.
Then To tidy up, get a registry patch file, cdgone.reg, from
www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it, r-click on it and merge
it into the registry

Reboot; and in Control Panel - Admin tools services double click 'IMAPI
CD burning'. If it is Started click Stop, then set Startup type to
'Disabled'

Then start again on the HP drivers. Make quite sure you have the XP
version

Alex,
Thanks for your reply. I got the auto-logon fixed, but your advice
regarding the CD-RW drive did not help, although it prodded me into
taking a deeper look in the Device Manager. In there, it showed a
device under "Other Devices" with a question mark. I looked in the
properties and it showed the location of LPT1 (which is where the drive
is connected.) So, I look at the driver page and it said "No driver has
been loaded for this device." So, I clicked "Upgrade Driver" and voila!

Thanks again,
Geoffrey
