Problems with Windows updates

M

MaryL

I have always updated Windows regularly. I automatically receive
notification (with the little yellow shield showing in the task bar), and I
click on the notice to download, followed by a selection to install. After
a recent download, everything changed. The last few times I clicked on
download, the yellow shield instantly disappeared (instead of showing the
percentage of download), and I never was given an option to install. As far
as I can tell, nothing has happened -- this all occurred literally within a
second, and when I check for updates in Control Panel the latest date is
shown as 11/19/06. I have gone through this process several times since
that date (most recently -- today).

What is happening? It almost looks as if updates are actually being
rejected instead of being downloaded.

I am using Win XP-Home Edition. Version 5.1 (Build 2600. Service Pack 2)

Thanks,
MaryL

Check the Update log in Windows

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy
and paste the error codes into a new thread on the WU Newsgroup so someone may be
able to assist you. On the other hand, you may be able to find the error code and
other suggestions by searching the Windows Update Newsgroup.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie
KB896688) and post the contents of the failed update.
This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

Thanks for the help. Ironically, the yellow shield reappeared before I
could follow your suggestion, and this time it once again showed percent
download. When I restarted the computer, the downloads were installed. So,
things seem to be back to normal, but I will bookmark the information you
provided.
