Pausing Windows update downloads

When I connect to the Internet I often get a little yellow shield in the task
bar. If I put the pointer on it, it tells me that a Windows update is
downloading. I only have a normal modem connection and these updates take up
time and resources. I would like them to proceed only when I am not using the
Internet to work on other things. I have tried clicking on the yellow shield,
and also right clicking, in order to get some options so I can pause the
download, but nothing happens. How can I pause and restart these downloads at
my convenience? Thanks for any replies.

Control Panel > Automatic Updates. Select the option to get notification
only and visit the Microsoft Update site in order to install available
updates whenever you want.
