Problems with sending/checking for mail

When I open Windows Mail I can only send/recieve mail once. After this I get
an error message (with no details), and then I have to restart the entire
program before I can check my mail again. This is really frustrating! Any
good advice??

This is probably caused by your antivirus program. Windows Mail
is not compatible with most McAfee or Norton security programs.
Those will need to be uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Thank you for your reply! I have uninstalled Norton, but unfortunately it
didn't help. Do you have anu other ideas as to what may be the reason?

Do you get no error messages you could post here for analysis?

After you uninstalled Norton, did you reboot, delete the
corrupted email account, then recreate it from scratch?

Thank you so much, brink and Gary VanderMolen, that did the trick! It was
very nice of you to help! :)

Glad you got the last of the Norton debris off your machine.
People find it hard to believe how pervasively troublesome
that antivirus is.

Hi Gary

I'm experiencing the same problem as alot of people here - when trying to
send and receive in Windows Mail I'm asked for a username and password. This
window keeps popping up and I can neither send or receive.
You've mentioned many times that some virus programmes are uncompatible and
you suggest Avast. I originally had Norton on my new laptop but have
uninstalled it and am now running Avast. I've also changed the settings so
that it does not scan email. I've deleted my email account, closed Mail, and
set it up again. I'm still not having any luck! Your advice would be
appreciated!

When I click on sending/receiving the dialog box opens with an ! and shows
nothing on the error folder and does nothing on the task folder. If I click
on receive all or/and sending all everything works alright. Do you know why
and how to solve the problem?

Thank you

You might find it useful to click on Tools and then either Send and Receive
or Synchronize All.

Make sure you are not using incompatible third party security
software. Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
or Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

When I open windows mail it downlads new mail. After that I can click send
mail but to receive I must click receive only. When I click send/receive I
get an error message with no details at all. Thanks for any help yo

Sometimes your antivirus program will interfere with the Send/Receive
function. Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee and
Norton security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled, NOT
just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like:
AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning option.

Hi
If you have "desktop SMS" installed on your computer, uninstall it, restart
and try your sending and receiving etc.
Worked for me.
