Problems with Network Setup

J

Jim May

Am seting up Home Network;
Two PC's - both XP home edition;
Using Linksys Router - Cox Cable connected into Router

Have already established Web connection
and e-mail connection ON BOTH, no problem, Both Working fine!!

Can't however Communicate between PC1 and PC2 for File and print sharing.
I've established a Network connection for each (on each PC), which when
tested under STATUS is OK..

When I click on the MyNetwork Places (on the Desktop)
I see the option to "View Workgroup Computers" - when I select I see Both
PC's Under my MSHOME foldername.
When I click on my PC1 - I'm able to access the folders OK; but when I click
on the PC2 I get mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server... <<
Yikes, I'm the Administrator and I don't know if it is 2:30 or Tuesday..

When I try to add a network place on PC2 and
enter \\MyPC1\SharedDocs (SharedDocs is the name
of my Shared Documents folder located at
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents
on my PC1 -- ) and click Next, I get "The folder you entered does not
appear to be valid. Please choose another.

My as confused as any person can be..
Any help offered would be appreciated.

Jim,

Your problem is quite common here. It can, unfortunately, have a number of
causes.

First, ensure that the necessary network components and services are present on
both computers.

Next, check for misconfigured / overlooked firewalls, and for registry setting
restrictanonymous, on each computer.
Misconfigured / overlooked firewalls:

Registry setting restrictanonymous:

Finally, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we
can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely:

Please let us know if any of these suggestions are of any help. What you learn
may help others in the future, and that's the purpose of these forums.

I ran into that last week. I couldn't access a wireless laptop from a
desktop. The laptop did not have "File and printer sharing for Microsoft
networks" enabled. Just tossing out ideas, here; I am sure that isn't the
only reason for such problem, just the fix that worked for me.
