Problems with .mdw file and permissions - help!

Hi - I need help with an Access security problem. I've already Googled
this one but found no help and I'm starting to think there might not be
any to provide. Perhaps one of you kindly people can offer some
advice?

Some years ago I was given responsiblity for an Access database. The
previous person who created and maintained the database was a
well-meaning but not overly Access-savvy soul who decided one day that
it might be a good idea to enforce security on it. Then he left,
leaving it to me.

The database worked for some time, then all of a sudden it didn't. I'm
getting the following message when I attempt to open the .mdb file:

"You do not have the necessary permissions to use the <filname.mdb>
object. Have your system administrator or the person who created this
object establish the appropriate permissions for you."

I understand through some research that this is related to the
"Secured.mdw" file that's in the same folder as the .mdb file.

It seems that somehow the .mdw file has been changed, or is a different
one to what it should be, I don't know exactly. Getting the original
..mdw file isn't an option.

Does anyone have any ideas at all as to how I could go about accessing
the .mdb file?

Are you sure that you are joined to the correct workgroup? If you have a
secured.mdw file that was used to secure the MDB, you need to join that
workgroup file. This is best accomplished via a short cut, i.e.,

"full path to msaccess.exe" "full path to MDB" /wrkgrp "full path to
secured.mdw"

Thanks for the suggestion. That brings up a login box with a username
and a blank password field. Unfortunately, I have no idea what
password is required. It does require one though, it rejects a null
entry.

Did you have to log-on before it went bad - or not?

Maybe try /every/ .MDW file on your PC. That is, set up the shortcut to
point to the first mdw file & see if that works. If not, try the next
mdw file, & so on. It could not hurt to try that.

HTH,
