Hi guys,

Any help would be appreciated. I was doing a clean install of windows xp Pro
over my old version of Windows XP home. That is from my old XP Home OS, I
slipped in the new XP Pro disk and then followed instructions for a clean
installation. (non upgrade installation)

Installation was going fine including following setup's prompts for deleting
the previous version of windows on my HD. until I suddenly reached a screen
with the message "Setup cannot access the CD containing the Windows XP
installation files." It also included the message "to restart setup, copy
the installation files on to your hard disk"

However whenever I try to move from that screen by quitting (pressing the F3
button - because no other option is possible) my computer just simply
reboots and then repeats the setup process that eventually brings me back to
the same screen with the same message above. My old OS also seems to have
been now deleted as well and so I can't access either new or old OS to be
able to copy said files on to the hard disk.

How should I proceed. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

Please include the exact error message when you post your query...

Check the XP CD for scratches, smudges or any visible marks.. if it has any
such marks, try wiping the disk clean using a soft dry cloth.
If your CD looks okay, it could be a problem with the drive. Try using a CD
ROM lens cleaner disk..
If your system has two drives, like a CD-RW and a DVD-ROM (for example), try
restarting setup with the XP CD in the second drive.

There are two likly posabilitys...

1. You instalation media is damaged.
2. Your CD-ROM drive has difficulty reading the disk past a certian
point (obviusly this could be caused by damaged media, but it could be
due to faulty CD-ROM drive).

Posible Solutions...

1. Take the CD back to ware you bought it and ask for a replacment,
saying that the media is damaged and dose not install.
2. Get a knowen working CD-ROM drive and use that to try and install
windows.
