Problems with IE6 after Windows security updates

After running the various Windows (security related) updates and installing Ad-aware, I experience different problems with IE6: When trying to run the Norton Antivirus I get the report NAV requires IE4.01 or greater to be installed, also MSN Mail function gives similar report. I tried to uninstall IE6 to reinstall it, but this did not work, all updates of IE6 SP1 were not installed as the report "a newer version is already installed on your computer". Also the security settings recommended ("high") in different windows reports have as a result that I cannot read or wrte any emails! What to do?

Change your security settings to the Default or Medium settings. You may be
prompted to reboot, so do so if asked. Go to the Windows Update site and
see if there are any updates for your system, specifically the critical
updates. If so, download and install all of them indicated. Some of them
must be installed one at a time. Keep scanning and installing updates until
you get all the critical updates that are found for your system. Check your
copy of NAV to see if there are any patches or updates available. If so,
download and install them.
