Problems with Hibernation and standby mode

I have a new computer using a AMD 2.4 GHZ processor, 512
m bytes of RAM and running Window XP home edition. I very
much want to use the Hibernation and Standby modes but
unfortunately neither work properly

Hibernation Mode.

When I use this mode the computer will close down ok in
Hibernation however when you boot up the computer it
starts to run through its self check routine but then it
stalls and I am left with a black screen with a white bar
that moves across the screen saying 'Resuming Windows'
There is also a statement at the bottom of the screen

' For troubleshooting and advanced start-up
option for windows press F8'

The only way out of this problem is to power down the
computer and reboot. Then you get the following message

'The last attempt to restart the system from
previous location failed attempt to restart again'

'Delete restoration data and proceed to system
boot menu'

If you accept this and press 'return' the computer
continues to boot up ok and starts windows XP. To prevent
this problem continuing you simply have to remove the
hibernation tick box on the Power Options page.

This function used to work ok on this computer but
something has changed and I cannot find the problem. I
have tried all the obvious things however it makes it
clear that you must have enough disk space to cover the
Ram size i.e. in my case I need to have 512 mb of disk
space. Well I have something like 70 Gb of disk space
however I did notice I only had about 300 mb of disk
space allocated to me as a user. I have now changed that
but the problem still exists.

I have searched the Microsoft Knowledge base and although
there seem to be many problems with Hibernation I don't
seem to be able to resolve this issue. It does say there
are fixes for different symptoms but not this one.

I think I am operating on Service Pack 1 but I tried to
down load a number of fixes that are subsequent to
Service Pack1
but they seem to take a huge time to down load and then
they failed.

Standby Mode

This works except for one point. The Fans inside the
computer do not shut down therefore whatever driver
controls the fans it does not seem to work. This is
frustrating because you don't want the fans running 24hrs
a day when you are in standby mode. Again this did work
but something has changed in the settings. I have tried
everything I can in the BIOS but that makes no difference.

Obviously if I shut the computer down from the Shut Down
option that switches the fans off.

I would welcome any help you can offer or if you can
point at where I can get some help

Thanks

Regards Mike Coffee

i had a similar problem with a brand new HP/Compaq laptop. It turns out to
be that i had a mouse plugged in via USB. unplug the mouse and standby works
just fine...I think its a driver or firmware problem...
