Problems with Gifs URGENT

Hi
Since I download SP2, the firewall erase all my graphics, gif, jpeg, I know
cause I though the group was making fun out of me. I have a graphic group. I
send a graphic myself and I see it for about 2 seconds then a pop up windows
appears saying firewall delete the images as they could be a virus. I check
all my graphics and all of them are file not found. I resolve to turn off the
firewall and the graphics came and I can see them but they open in picture
and fax viewer, I try a search for gif or jpg and the results was no file
found matching your questions, try another word. now I download about 5
programs for view the graphics but as soon as I open the graphic again they
open in a black box, no pics.
I try with the internet options cleaning the files and the offline files, I
try restore point that I made the day I change to SP2, and back up windows
but I can't cause my OS is SP1 and I upgrade to SP2. I need to found a way to
reinstall gif and JPEG extensions. or I have to reformat the computer and
start all over again? from o.?
I never have this kind of problems all happens when I upgrade to SP2. first
some files don't open, then all the settings I have were changed, I have
contact microsoft by phone 2 times and you can only contact 3 times. and I
don't want to loose the 3rd call just in case.
thanks in advance

Ok, did you try to re-assign the assignments to .gif's and jpegs to IE or
picture viewer. Also SP2 does block potential virus threats that can be
imbetted into the jpg's and gif extensions. Do you have any anti-virus
software running too? I would not reinstall. Also, try adding the extensions
as exceptions in the windows firewall software. Please reply if this helps.

Hi
How I re-assign to .gif and .jpeg? is that right click open with? I did that
and there is programs but none to open animations (gif. or jpeg they open in
picture and viewer. about the sp2 blocking images is not SP2 is the firewall,
cause it display a box saying firewall block the images cause they are
potential virus tranfers. something like that. I disable (turn it off). and I
can see the graphics but if I save them when I need to open them they open in
picture and fax viewer. I enter the registry and search for .gif and .jpg and
it returns no founds. so I guess the firewall delete the registry of
graphics, I don't have any other option to think off. yes I have AdVir
antivirus but its was fine and working great all this happens with the
upgrade to SP2 and the famous firewall, they should give the option to
install or not. now all my graphics are white squares with a red x (the ones
the firewall delete. and in there was all the graphics of my web site. that
is what gets me in the nerve. I have try all even restore to when I install
SP2 and nothing, now I was searching in the knowledge base and is an article
that said that if the extensions were made using sp1 and they change using
SP2 I can't recover them. unless I reformat the disk and install the SP1,
cause I can't fix with the disk cause I update and the disk pop up that yu
try to run an old version in a newer version and the options are ok and thats
it. I even download the guided help and nothing. Im in a point that or I left
the computer as it is and let the learning group do what they want , cause I
lost all and I was working in the web pages making them accesible to all
browsers and impairs and all the graphics for them are gone. 4 months of
work. then I download the program xp fix and repair and I lost the money
cause it doesn't fix anything., I try to contct support and the phone have
claws cause nobody answer. I think I will have to reformat and stay with SP1
even when there will be no support starting in october. but this SP2 is a
real mess. well not SP2 the firewall.and what got bother me must is that they
don't have a warning before you upgrade. is like download and fix yourself.
did you know that if I restore to the date before I install SP2 I still
have the same problem? and all cause the firewall destroy the registry key
for graphics.Im looking in every article I found about reinstall gif and JPEG
extensions and all said the same get in the registry and change the codes.
but first made a backup. for what I need a back up if Im gonna be in the same
problem. sorry to write so much but is really frustrating. and more when all
your hard work of 4 months go away like smoke.
thanks for reading and thanks for answering. oh I do try what you ask for
and nothing.

If this is four months of work I would not format. Instead, use a data
recovery utility (if necessary) to get the files off the computer and
burned on a CD or something. Even if you have to format the box (which
I don't think is strictly necessary but may be the fastest thing to get
you going), you won't lose several months of work. Also, I really
recommend sticking with SP2 - it has a lot of really important security
improvements. (And then immediately go and get updates from windows
update until there are no more available.)

Or if you're interested in maybe avoiding the formatting, we could talk
more about the issues that you're seeing. It sounds really odd that
the firewall is deleting images (firewalls don't generally delete stuff
- they block scary network/internet traffic). Perhaps your virus
protection looked like a firewall notification? More likely, some
malware is telling you to turn off your firewall.
