Problems with Firewire card

Is it possible for the device manager to show my firewire card installed and
working properly and yet it's still defective? I can't get it to recognize
either of my mini-DV cameras.

Running XP SP2. I've tried 2 different firewire cables with 2 different
cameras. Three different capture programs, WinDV, Windows Movie Maker, and
Pinnacle Studio 9 and in all combinations they say device not found. Also
tried plugging in to different ports on the card. The only variable that I
haven't changed is the card itself, which shows OK in device manager.

I seem to recall that in the past when I hooked up a camera I'd get an info
box that XP recognizes the new device. I'm not getting that.

I've made some major changes recently to my PC. Added 1GB RAM to take it up
to 2GB. Swapped a 120GB HD for a 320GB but the cloning went OK as far as I
can tell. Added a 2nd 320GB internal drive and took the 250GB that was
internal and put it in an external box so I now have 3 external USB drives,
all working fine, and 2 internal SATA drives.

Tried to do a system restore to a time a few days before I changed drives
and did the clone but XP said it was unable to restore. (Possibly because
there's a different hard drive?). The last time I did a successful capture
was probably in mid-February so I don't even know if the problem is related
to my recent upgrades.

I've ordered a new firewire card which probably won't arrive until next
week. If the answer to my first question is yes then the card should fix it.
But if you say no, I'd welcome any suggestions as to what I can do to get me
up and running again.

Thanks

Joe

It's possible. Not very likely, but possible.

Do any of these cameras come with their own drivers? If so, you need to
install them.

Not for firewire. The Sony camera has drivers for USB and those are for
older OS. The Canon GL2 has no extra drivers. The only thing I can say for
sure is two months ago they worked fine.

Found out the problem was the hibernate file wasn't large enough after I had
increased the RAM from 1GB to 2GB.

In researching the problem through google I found that many people had
problems with the hibernate function after increasing their RAM, usually
from 1GB to 2GB the way I did. The only suggestions I saw was to wait for MS
to come up with a fix. Since I'd seen it mentioned several times I believed
that it was the only solution for now.

This is the sequence I was given to do and it worked. Credit goes to Tom
Scales on the Dell forum.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unplug the USB drives
remove the firewire card
remove the 2nd SATA drive
turn the primary drive back on.

Boot and see if Windows comes up (it did). Turn off hibernation, reboot and
delete the hibernation file. Reboot again.

Turn on hibernation. Reboot

This will create a hibernation file at 2GB instead of 1GB. It didn't have
room for your new memory.

If all this works (it did), add things one at a time.
