Ieee1394 Firewire Registry Problem

D

Dan R

I have a 2-year-old system Dell Dimension E510 running Windows XP Media
Center edition on which I've frequently used the firewire ports (2) to
connect to external hard drives. I got a new drive and since I connected it
neither of the ports will work. I tried re-installing the driver, using two
different cables and using two different drives in both ports and nothing
seems to help. Both drives I am trying work ok when hooked up to USB ports,
but no the firewire ports.
I called the manufacturer and they sent me a new firewire card. I put this
in and I even tried switching to a different slot, but still no luck.
Device Manager shows the device being there, and when I installed the new
card it said "New hardware found" for this.

Two strange things happened at the time when I think the problem occurred:

1. When I installed the new drive windows started the new hardware wizard
and it failed with some kind of error I can't remember.

2. In trying this repeated times immediately after the problem started I
had a strange power issue, where I could not turn on either of the drives.
The power light just came on then turned off. After leaving both drives
alone for several minutes they then powered on successfully, but still not
working.

The manufacturer says to re-install the operating system, but my business
can't afford to be down that long. By process of elimination there aren’t
many things left to check. Everyone I talk to about this says it has to be
something in the registry, but no one can tell me what to check. I have
searched the Internet high and low, and can’t find a solution. Can anyone
tell me what to change in the registry to make this work? Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

This can be a right royal PITA when this sort of thin happens. If you can
spare the time, one thing I can suggest is to find an old hard disk, swap it
for the one in the PC (you don't have to screw it in or anything fancy).
Install a basr bones XP system from you installation or recovery media. You
can then see if it will detect and install your Firewire card. This will at
least tell you if there is a hardware problem. If it does work, then in the
absence of any other suggestions, at least you will know that a system
rebuild will solve the problem.

I'm just sorry I can't be more helpful, but little niggling problems like
this are not uncommon.

An external enclosure should have 2 led indicators. One being a power on
indication. The second being an activity indicator. If the power on
indicator does not remain lit immediately after physically turning the
enclosure on AND remain lit until the external enclosure is physically
turned off, there's something wrong with the enclosure.

I'm not sure what you mean by enclosures. The 2 external hard drives I have
now each only have one light, and it stays on when powered up and flashes
when reading or writing. They have their own power cords. They also both
work fine when connected to a USB port. It it just the firewire ports that
will not work.
