problems with dial in

Enno Lenze

Hello!
I tried to dial in to another person. Dial up is configured here, dial
in at him. The Connection works, i can send a ping.
But i cant see his shares. Tried it with the same Workgroup, but i did
not help.

The other problem is, that the perosn has not much knowelge of a
computer an is a few thousand miles away, so i have to try to find his
configuration problems as well. On the other hand i'm usuall using other
operating systems and have only th absic knowlage of windows.

What i checked:
- dial in basicly works (connection is established)
- username exists on that computer
- Harddiscs are shared
- same Workgroup

any other ideas?

regards, enno

enno,

What IP Addresses are you using? Are both the computers Windows 2000? Both
Pro? what configuration options did you use for the dialup?

Both are win2000 pro. We are using the ip adresses they have chosen
(169.x.x.x), ping works fine, so the connection is ok. Which options do
you mean? I configured "dial up to privat network" (no vpn) and did not
change anything else.

It sounds like you need something more like PCAnywhere than a remote dial-up
connection. The ability to see and access your friend's computer as if you
were sitting at it will make troubleshooting much easier.

yes, i was thinkng about that but know the problem:
he will be unable to install it as i guess ;) so i ahve to wait until
someone who is able to do that is close o him.

*arggh* what a situation.

On the dial-up connection properties, do you have "file and print sharing"
and "client for microsoft networks installed"?
