Problems with Audio/Sound

I have sound...but barely. All volume controls set to max. Just can hear.
Same with speakers or headsets. Worked fine till about a month ago...checked
cables, all appears to be ok...anyone out there who can help me?

Have you tried updating the audio drivers?
Have you tried a different audio card?

It could be another program that use used recently?
I once was watching a movie using power DVD and muted the sound,it muted the
sound on my entire system even when I closed the program,look around in
other applications.
