Problems with Address Bar

I have two computers (from different manaufacturers) using
IE6 and both have this same problem. When I enter a
URL in the address bar (ie. www.microsoft.com) it often
jumps to the biginning of the field while I am typing.
So instead of getting www.microsoft.com, it may be
comwww.microsoft. It seems to happen most when I hit
the period key.

I thought it was me so I have tried it several times very
carefully... plus it happens to my wife and kids.

Some program (usually spyware\parasite) may have overridden the URL prefix
setting?
