Hello Jan,
Thanks for offering to help, I really appreciate it!
The error message is not specific - it just says there was a problem
with Internet Explorer and asks for permission to send a report to
Microsoft, which I allowed on several occasions. I did not see an
error code or explanation.
The problem is very peculiar in that it doesn't allow the last browser
window to be closed - it just minimizes it, and when I click on it in
the task bar to maximize the window again, it either just hangs there
for 15-20 seconds and then disappears, or it maximizes into a
completely blank page until it disappears a number of seconds later.
I can't upgrade because "Windows Update" doesn't find any updates (I
have it set up to automatically check, so I must be up-to-date), and
I also tried uninstalling from the Windows Components section of
Add/Remove Programs, but installing it back from there didn't do any
good.
Any ideas what else I can try?
Thanks again,
TT
First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:

(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

If nothing there helps, please post back to this thread.
