Problems when closing browser

When I close the browser window, it takes quite some time to really close it,
and sometimes it results in an error message. I don't know what is causing
this or how to fix it. Can anyone help, please?
I'm using IE version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158. I have a
pretty fast computer and I am also constantly running McAfee Security and
Spybot-SD Resident.
Thanks in advance,
TT

Hi TT :)

Could you please post back here with the exact wording of the error message
you are getting? It is sometimes makes it easier for us to determine the
cause of the problem. :)

Hello Jan,
Thanks for offering to help, I really appreciate it!
The error message is not specific - it just says there was a problem with
Internet Explorer and asks for permission to send a report to Microsoft,
which I allowed on several occasions. I did not see an error code or
explanation.
The problem is very peculiar in that it doesn't allow the last browser
window to be closed - it just minimizes it, and when I click on it in the
task bar to maximize the window again, it either just hangs there for 15-20
seconds and then disappears, or it maximizes into a completely blank page
until it disappears a number of seconds later.
I can't upgrade because "Windows Update" doesn't find any updates (I have it
set up to automatically check, so I must be up-to-date), and I also tried
uninstalling from the Windows Components section of Add/Remove Programs, but
installing it back from there didn't do any good.
Any ideas what else I can try?
Thanks again,
TT

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/cwshredder.zip
**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.
CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

If nothing there helps, please post back to this thread.

Hi TT :)

In addition to the information provided by Frank, you might try the
following and see if it helps:

Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab> UNcheck "Enable third party
browser extensions"
OK out and reboot the machine.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

I ran McAfee Virus Scan, SpyBot, Ad-Aware and CWShredder. Each found things
the others had missed. I also disabled third party browser extensions per
Jan's recommendation, and re-started, and I still have the same problem.
Something in Internet Explorer must have gotten corrupted, but I don't know
how to repair it in XP.
Any other ideas?
Thanks,
TT

For WinXP SP2 I would first uninstall SP2 from Control Panel | Add/Remove
Programs. Then use the following:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378
Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.
The section
Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet
Explorer 6
works on earlier versions of Windows.

After that I would reinstall SP2.

I was hoping there was a more direct way to repair IE, without reinstalling
the operating system. I bought my computer with SP2 already installed and it
doesn't appear in "add/remove programs" as a separate item. If there is no
other way to fix IE directly, I think I will just switch to Netscape until a
better patch for XP is developed or the next version of IE comes about.
