Problems Uninstalling IE 7-Have searched blogs

Tried to remove IE 7.
As posted on blogs and the Microsoft site:
Control Panel...Add/Remove...click to uninstall

IE 6 DID NOT COMPLETELY RETURN!!!

I keep getting the following messages:

"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."
Also get "Setup has detected a newer version of internet explorer already
installed on the system"
If I see another post of "IE 6 will automatically return" then I will
scream. I already know what SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED! It didn't, so please do not
restate that obvious point. I see that this question has been asked before-is
there no one that can answer it?
Seeing as everything is already screwed up- I am a little leery about what
to do. I am not very technical in regards to computers. I tried System
Restore, but IE 6 does not work there either, so I reverted back to the
present agin. HELP... or is my motherboard messed up yet again...

I am running XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2

Uninstalling Internet Explorer 7 and reinstalling Internet Explorer 6

To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 to return to Internet Explorer 6 on
Windows XP

1. Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel."
2. Click "Add or Remove Programs."
3. Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box.
4. Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer
7 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove." (If you are
running Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview - March 20 or later, it is
not necessary to check "Show Updates.")
5. Go here and select the appropriate version of Internet Explorer 7 6
for your operating system.


More complicated method of uninstalling IE 7
Only try this if previous method didn't work for you.

Edit the registry to change the Internet Explorer IsInstalled flag
from 1 to 0.

You should post your question to the IE experts in the Internet Explorer
newsgroup. There are quite a few posts there so peruse them for something
on topic before posting a new message.

In order to make a change to your registry, click Start, Run, type
"regedit" (without the quotations) and hit OK.

Next, click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Then expand (by
clicking the plus sign next to) Software, then expand Microsoft, then
expand Active Setup, then expand Installed Components. Click on each
of the 32 character options and look in the previw screen. You want
the one that says BRANDIN.CAB on the right hand side in correlation to
the ComponentID. Once you find this, screen, underneath the
ComponentID you will see IsInstalled (it has a blue icon instead of
maroon as the other ones do). Right click IsInstalled and left click
Modify. Change the 1 to a 0 and click OK. Close the registry editor
by clicking the red X at the top right hand corner of the screen.

***CAUTION-MAKING CHANGES TO THE REGISTRY CAN BE DANGEROUS. PLEASE
TAKE CAUTION IN DOING SO. IF YOU NOTICE PROBLEMS AFTER MAKING THESE
CHANGES, FOLLOW DIRECTIONS ABOVE, AND CHANGE THE 0 TO A 1***

Now, to repair your IE6 installation (found on second link above),
click Start, Run, type "sfc /scannow" (without quotations) and hit OK.

IF THIS DOES NOT WORK YOU WILL MORE THAN LIKELY NEED TO RE-INSTALL
WINDOWS XP

changes. It should just start working immediately. You will probably
get back your access to your other programs, but you will have to find
that out by testing. I would make the changes and, if it doesn't work
for you, and you are happy (somewhat) with the way it is working now,
just change it back to the way it was.

Have made the change-no difference... I think it is only one program that will not work-I will uninstall/reinstall it and see...

Note:
I just found the papers I was writing on when I first uninstalled IE7. I was
suppose to look for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886904) and remove
it first if found. It was not there. Am I suppose to have it?

This is driving me nuts-one of the problems I was having with IE7 was that
some of the "clickable links" do not work. Some work, while in the same page
others will not. Still having that problem. Thanks again for your time in
helping me with this...

You would only have this hotfix if you received this update from
Microsoft. If it isn't there, that is a good thing (although it
doesn't fix your problem). After making the changes you said there is
no difference. Do you mean that IE 7 is still installed? I don't see
how that can be. After making these changes, if you go to "Add/Remove
Programs", does IE 7 still show up as a removable program? If so,
remove it (after these changes have been applied)

Let me know how things go.
