Problems shutting down

I'm running activated RC1, and was totally impressed with the speed
improvements over Beta 2. For some reason though, it's now taking over 10
minutes to shut down and last night it automatically rebooted to a screen
similar to the old dual-boot screen saying that Windows didn't shut down
properly and suggested starting in safe mode. I let it boot normally and the
error reporting popup appeared but after checking it just closed, not even
saying there is no current fix and to check back later. It's about the 5th
time the slow shut-down has occurred, but the first that it didn't shut down
at all and rebooted.

I'm wondering if PC-Cillin has anything to do with it. does anyone know of
any other anti-virus programs with demos that will run on Vista? Anyone else
having shut-down problems?

I'm not having any problems here with Vista nor PC-Cillin, or shutting down
problems.

Did you Defrag the hard drive in Vista?

I remember the shut down was slow before doing a complete defrag of my hard
drives.

Yeah, I did - Twice in three days. Also did a disk cleanup. I used the
spyware module in PC-Cillin (which I think is horrible compared to Spyware
Doctor, but I haven't tried to install that yet on Vista) and I hope I didn't
remove something I shouldn't have.

No I don't think...If you did remove something you would see lot of strange
problems.

Hi Guys,

I'm seeing the same problem in about 1 out of every 3 shutdowns and have on
a couple of occasions had the good old BSOD at the end of shutdown process.
Same with error reporting... checks and dissapears... am just waiting for
the "You're on your own mate!" message.
Also running PC-Cillin and would also like to know what's going on as my
system checks out clean and happy.

Hi,

Firstly, I noticed nothing (in fact the speed of shutdown was improved from
beta 2 imo and i am v. impressed)

HOWEVER, on my desktop it is much faster than on my laptop (which isnt bad,
but u can notice a difference). After defragging (not a big fan of the new
defragger but it works) it does improve speed and shutdown/start-up times
imo.

Also note, on beta 2 I had PC Cillin installed as it was the only one MS
told you about, however since having RC1, I have used Avast anti-virus,
which even the free version is brilliant! and no slow down and no hick-ups!
(yet).

So I wouldnt say its totally down to PC-Cillin, however I dont think (from
my experience) it helps in any way.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the info. I'll remove PC-Cillin and try the Avast anti-virus, not
too impressed with the PC-Cillin anyway.
I'll swap, test and feed back then we'll know one way or another.

Hi again Marc,
Sorry for mispelling your name in my last... brain was thinking I'd done it
wrong as finger was pressing post! Fingers must be too fast for brain.... or
brain too slow.... whatever, once again my apologies.

Hi again,
I've now uninstalled PC-Cillin from machine and done 4 restarts; 2 OK, 1
hang and 1 BSOD so it's not PC-Cillin
A thought from one of the other thread re sleep mode problems there's a
query asking if the problem might be related to older motherboards; could
this be a case here?
My board is over 4 years old with the last BIOS update 2 1/2 years or so ago.
How old is your board John?
