Hi, Bob.

This is the first time I've heard of this in Vista. Apparently, as Vista is
trying to shut down, it is hitting some glitch that triggers the
Automatically restart function.

In earlier Windows versions (Win2K, WinXP), the standard advice was to
change the setting for what Vista should do on System Failure. The default
behavior is to Automatically Restart - which is fine, in most cases. As we
all learn early, a simple reboot fixes many momentary computer glitches.
But, when the reboot doesn't help, we are left with no clue as to what the
problem is.

It's a long click-path, but: Start | Control Panel | System | Advanced
System Setting (you'll have to be an Administrator to continue past here) |
Advanced | Startup and Recovery/Settings. On this page, UNcheck the box
under System failure that says Automatically restart.

The next time Shut down hits the mysterious glitch, instead of rebooting,
your computer should halt with a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) telling you
what the problem is. Most of us can't decipher the codes, but if you will
copy them and post them here VERBATIM, somebody should be able to interpret
them for you.

While it hasn't been updated yet for Vista, this page discusses the problem
in WinXP and should give you some ideas:
WINDOWS XP SHUTDOWN & RESTART TROUBLESHOOTING
http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

Let us know what you learn, Bob. Just because I haven't seen this in Vista
before doesn't mean that we won't be seeing it often, now that Vista is
fully released.

We are having the exact same problem. Everytime we try to shut down, it
automatically tries to reboot and asks us to choose Safe Mode or another
mode. If we don't select anything, then it just automatically reboots.
Anyone else had this problem?

Check the setting for automatically restart on error and if it's checked,
turn it off.
Right click My Computer | Properties | In the left pane click Advanced
System Settings | Advanced tab - Startup and Recovery - Settings. Under
System failure uncheck Automatically restart. Ok out.

Now do a shut down. If it's an error condition it should go to a blue
screen. If it does record the error verbatim an post back with it.

I have the same problem, the only way to shut it down is to hold your power
button in until it does, doing the "automatic restart uncheck" does not work,
I have been emailing back and forth with support and they have no clue
either, I sure hope Microsoft support gets a handle on this issue, I have
tried to disable drivers and hardware to see what is causing it and nothing
has this pin-pointed yet!

Thank you for contacting Windows Vista Research Team

My name is Lalu, I have taken the ownership of the case and will be
assisting you with your Windows Vista issue, as I informed you earlier.

I understand that “your computer restarts when you try to shut downâ€. I
realize the importance of your issue and assure you that we will resolve this
at your earliest convenience.

After analysing all the mails that you sent us and the information that are
available with us with respect to this case, I am suggesting troubleshooting
that would help you in resolving the problem. But to resolve this issue
faster, please help me understand the issue better by providing me the
following information:

1.) Please let me know what is the error message you get when you
“Disable automatic restart on system failure†and then shutdown. (This step
should produce Blue Screen Error message. The error code would normally be a
string of numbers followed by a system file). Please note that this the only
way that would help us in determining the Root Cause of the problem.

2.) What happens when you try to shut down you computer from Safe Mode
(If we have a problem while shutting down from Safe mode, then it’s most
likely that it’s caused by a Hardware component).

3.) Have you tried to shutting down your computer after unplugging all
you external devices (Printer, Scanner, Etc.)

4.) Please give me the make and model of your Network card.

5.) Please provide me with your System information file which would help
me reproduce this issue in our Labs.

To get the system information file,

->Go to Start (pearl button)-> type msinfo32 in the Search bar and hit Enter.

You’ll get the System Information window, select System Summary in the left
pane.

Copy everything you find there in the right pane and please sent to us.
(Don’t send attachments. It won’t reach us)

Please try the following steps in the order that its suggested and let me
know the results of the same.

Suggestion 1:

***********

First of all, we can reset your Network Card property settings. For that,
please follow the following steps.

1.) Click Start , type Device manager in the Start Search box, and then
press ENTER

2.) If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation,
type your password, or click Continue.

3.) Now you will be getting a Device manager window, in that double click
Network Adapter

4.) Right click your Network Adapter and go to Properties

5.) In the Properties window, click on the Power Management tab

6.) Check the first option, ‘Allow the computer to turn off this device
to save power’

7.) Uncheck the second option, ‘Allow this device to wake the computer’

8.) Click OK and Restart your system and

9.) Then Shutdown to check whether its works fine.

Once you have completed the steps above, kindly check if you are still
encountering the same issue. If the issue remains, please proceed to the
below resolution.

Suggestion 2:

***********

Another cause for this problem may be due to device drivers are not being
unloaded during shutdown.

For this issue, what we can do is,

Manually disable all non essential hardware devices and unplug all USB
devices.

Once the faulty device has been found either leave it disabled or find the
latest

compatible drivers.

1.) Unplug all the external Devices

2.) Click on start and type Device Manager in search bar and hit
enter.

3.) In the device manager window, navigate to Network Adapter and
click on plus symbol.

4.) Below yow will find your Network card, highlight the Network
card and right click it and

click on Disable.

5.) Do the same steps (3,4)only for the following devices
mentioned below

Sound, Video and Game Controllers

Display Card

Modem

CD/DVD

Ports

USB devices (Please don’t do this if you are using USB keyboard
or Mouse )

6.) Restart your computer and then Shut down and check whether
the issue still exist.

Enable the devices one by one and restart the computer to make sure the
device is

working properly. (Note the computer has to restart to enable the device.
you should then restart the computer again to make sure it will unload the
drivers)

Now that you have completed the steps in resolution 2, please check if your
issue is resolved or not. If the issue continues, go ahead to the next step.

Suggestion 3:

***********

If your system has Easy CD Creator 5.0x or higher and/or Direct CD,
Uninstall the
programs and then try to shut down.

1.) Go to Start, type Control Panel in the Search bar and hit Enter.
2.) Click on Classic View in the left pane.
3.) Double Click Programs and Features
4.) Double Click Easy CD Creator 5.0x (Direct CD)
5.) Uninstall the program

Restart and then Shut down your computer

I hope your issue is resolved after completing the steps above. If the issue
stays then please get back to us and we will follow up with further
resolutions.

Your feedback is very important to us, to further enhance our support hence
I would appreciate your confirmation on the Suggestion that addressed in
resolving the issue for you.

My computer doesn't even go into a reboot! it just stays on the shutdown
page for hours (woke up this morning and found it STILL "shutting down" .
Have tried another suggestion of disabling my modem and the device driver is
not disabling the modem, it is just hung! What now Vista?

There are a number of outstanding issues affecting standby/hibernate and
shutdown. Unfortunately none of the available fixes have resolved the issue
on my Thinkpad laptop. You might try a quick search at
support.microsoft.com for "kbfix kbqfe" with a filter for Vista and see if
any exactly match your situation.
