windows vista will not shut down

G

Glenn

I just upgraded from XP to Vista and so far am kicking myself for it. After I
installed and got all my drivers updated i went to shut down windows and it
will not shut down. It closes all programs goes to the shut down screen and
then turns black and I get the blue screen of death. The pc then reboots.
Everything seems to be working proprerly and it is running great, I just have
this one issue. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.

Thanks,
Glenn

If I could have found the disk I would would have done that in the first
place LOL. I had a trojan I couldnt get rid of. When I ordered my computer
it was about a month before vista came out, and I preordered a copy from Dell
when i ordered the PC. I found the Vista disk but cant find the XP one so I
am stuck with it.

Ok so at the risk of sounding like an idiot how do I find out who
manufactured my motherboard? I checked the bios and I currently have the
latest version installed. I am assuming that I have the latest driver
installed for the motherboard since my original failed a few weeks ago and it
was replaced however I will check to make sure.

How do you know it's the latest if you don't know the manufacturer?

Google Belarc Advisor. It will tell you more than you need to know
about your computer.

'System Information' should give you the information.
My DELL XPS410 reports System Model as Dell DXP061 which is the motherboard
model number.

For some additional information about shutdown problems you can try:
Event Viewer
Custom Views / Shutdown broblems

Before you go chasing around in a lot of different directions, find out what
is causing the blue screen. What is the text of the failure? Any
notifications in event viewer? When the reboot occurs Windows should be
notifying you of the improper shutdown. What is the text of that
notification?

If you are unable to get the blue screen text before the reboot, on the
advanced tab of system properties click the settings button for startup and
recovery and uncheck the automatically restart box. Now duplicate the error
and report back or deal with the offending device/driver.

Hi, Glenn.

Obvious question #1: What does the blue screen say? Never mind the
"boilerplate", but tell us the rest of it verbatim: Stop Code (both number
and identifier, such as IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL), Driver name if shown, and
the 4 long hex numbers. They may make no sense at all to you (or to me),
but they will sat a lot to the people who can help you.

And it never hurts - and usually helps - to mention the make and model of
your computer or of your motherboard and other components if you built it
yourself, so that's Obvious question #2.

If the BSOD flashes too quickly for you to read it, there are at least 3
ways to see what it says. The first is to read the Event Logs, but I'm not
very good at that. The second is to press F8 during boot-up and choose to
not automatically restart on error.

The third way is to go to Control Panel | System | Advanced System Settings
(you'll need Administrator credentials to get past here) | Startup and
Recovery/Settings. Under System failure, UNcheck "Automatically restart".
Next time, you'll still have to restart, but the BSOD will stay on the
screen until you push the hardware button, giving you plenty of time to copy
down all the information there.

Shut Down problems can be hard to diagnose - or easy. Let's hope that yours
is easy.

About reverting to WinXP.... In my experience, it's just as hard to go
backward as to learn how to go forward. And you will still have that hill
to climb in front of you, not behind you.

If you have a lot of time invested in the vista setup, it might be
worth continuing to toy with it as some have suggested here. Otherwise
you'd be better off either ordering a replacement XP load CD from Dell
or purchasing XP on the used market and downloading the XP drivers
from Dell.

Ok thank you to all that replied. Sorry I didnt include more machine
specific info in the original post. If i ever come accross another issue
like this and have to post again I will remember that. The issue is now
fixed. Once I had a chance to actually view the blue screen and try to
figure out what it was trying to tell me, it pointed me to the driver for my
graphics card. I had originally tried to update it from the device manager
and was told that it was running the newest driver available so I figured
that wasnt the issue. However when I went to Ati's website I saw that there
were several newer versions. Once that was updated it was smooth sailing.
You guys are officially my heroes because i have been messing with this for
almost 4 days now. Thanks again!
