Problems sharing my adsl connection between 2 user acounts

G'day,
I hope someone can help me. I'm running winxp with all the
latest updates from microsoft. I've tried several times to share my
adsl connection on my desktop with my sons desktop on the same machine
and have both desktops downloading/browsing at the same time. The
trouble is that I am unable to do this. I'm using a Thompson alcatel
speedtouch 530 as the modem and the microsoft internet connection
firewall. If I start a file download on my desktop, switch users to my
sons desktop and try to browse the net, the status bar says that the
web site is found but no actual download of the site occurs. The pages
just hang. The same with mail and my sons p2p program. Switching back
to my desktop shows that my downloads are uninterrupted. Any
suggestions as to what I may have missed?

Cheers

Hi:

I am using a simple solution except need a few bucks.
You can get a switching hub to sharing internet connection w/o much of
settings if u intend to use LAN cable for network connection.

Alternatively, get a wireless router (simple one is fine) and connect it to
the ADSL modem and you would have a choice of using LAN or wireless card to
sharing. It is advised to set password for the connection though.

I used the first one before and now using the second one. Both work fine for
my ADSL sharing with other systems at my home.

this is a problem that has caused me great confusion and frustration.
What is the exact type of your dsl modem? Is it a USB model or an ETHERNET
type (connecting to your network card)?
what type of connection do you have with the other computer, is it also via
another network card?
Please give us an analytical discription of your setup.

G'day, There is only one machine involved. It is sharing the
connection between 2 user accounts on the same machine at the same
time that is the problem.

G'day Kenny,
ne machine only I'm afraid. The problem is sharing the
connection between 2 user accounts on the same machine at the same
time. I want to be able to download some quite large files (>100meg)
switch the user and allow my son to use the connection on his desktop
without disturbing my desktop or interrupting my download. I'm using a
Thompson alcatel speedtouch 530 as the modem on the usb port. I am
using the microsot firewall until I can get this sorted out.

I don't believe that you can do what you want.

How about starting the download while logged in as your son.
The download could go to your storage area.

G'day Ron,
Nah, I don't want to do that as the files are going into my
private folder. I don't want my sons to have any more access to the
machine than I give them. By doing that they can cancel the download,
see where it is going etc etc. By having the 2 desktops seperate, this
should accomplish the privacy concerns.

Maybe a download manager would get your downloads at a time when the
computer is not being used by your sons.
