Problems Setting Up a Small Wireless Home Network - Version II

G

Guest

I have had my wireless network working (see Problems Setting Up a Small
Wireless Home Network) elsewhere under Windows XP Networking and the Web, but
only at the expense of uninstalling my VPN software. I have now reinstalled
the VPN software, which sits on my server (MUMANDDAD), deactivated the
firewall as instructed by my computer experts at work, but my wireless home
network is not working (internet is OK, but not file sharing). I was hoping
that someone might be able to decipher the following diagnostics:

As you will see, I can now ping the IP address in both directions, but some
of the other standard diagnostics I have previously been advised to run
simply do not work.

On the workstation:
ping <server ip address>

Pinging 192.168.0.3 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.0.3: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=128

Reply from 192.168.0.3: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Joff,

The Error 6118 is the old "The List of Servers for This Workgroup...". In other
words, you still have browser problems. How about updated "browstat status"
from both computers?

Look at Hidden and restrictanonymous on both too.

You are sure that there are no more overlooked firewalls?

Chuck,

Your question about there being any more overlooked firewalls is a good one,
and frankly, I think it must be related to that somehow, but I feel as though
I have done all that I should. Disabled Windows firewall; established a
trusted zone on Norton Internet security for the IP address of each computer;
and done what the guys at work advised on the VPN, but it must be related to
that. Here is some additional information:

The 'node type' on \\mumanddad when I do an ipcofig /all is
"Unknown"

The computer browser status is "Started" on \\mumanddad, with a Startup Type
of "Automatic". For the record, on \\officetwo, computer browser status is
null, with a Startup Type of "Disabled".

I have run browstat on both machines and dumped the results below:

On \\mumanddad:

Status for domain WORKGROUP on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{2146DAED-CED3-461C-ACC3-51263F11D51E}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master browser name is held by: MUMANDDAD
Master browser is running build 2600

On \\officetwo:

Status for domain WORKGROUP on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{65809199-E4A5-4FB1-8C9F-9284C41E2895}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master browser name is held by: MUMANDDAD
Could not connect to registry, error = 53 Unable to determine build
