Home network problem (router and 2 laptops) part II

Hi Chuck,

I printed out and tried everything that you suggested from your previous
articles, but did not work unfortunately (I used the same title for this post
if you need to find what you said). So I did the next thing, running the
cdiag.cmd code you sent. Below is the output from one of the laptops, the
other one to follow in a few minutes. This is frustrating and I really
appreciate your help.

Andy,

OK, neither Dell nor Toshiba can reference each other, save a ping by ip
address. Since ping by ip address works both ways, we can rule out connectivity
problems. We're left with:
# Firewall (misconfigured / overlooked). What antivirus product are you using?
# Registry setting restrictanonymous.

Hi Chuck,

I have the restrictanonymous reg entry set to 0 on both computers, no
firewalls, and virusscan (disabling it on both laptops did not help).

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Andy

Andy,

What AntiVirus?

Both NetBIOS shares ("net view") and name resolution are being blocked - both
ways. This almost has to be a firewall.

The only other possibility is LSP / Winsock corruption. But you have a
symmetrical problem - neither computer can reference the other. LSP / Winsock
corruption generally doesn't hit both computers simultaneously.

Thanks for trying, Chuck.

I have VirusScan (a McAfee product).
I have just gone through two of the WinSock fixes with no improvement - will
try the others, but...

Best,
Andy

This couldn't be the security settings in Policy in XP Pro, could it?
Someone here pointed me to this, and solved my 'seeing each other' problems,
but I can't remember who. There is a setting which requires a password in
certain circumstances, but which can be disabled so as not to require a
password at all.

David,

He has name resolution problems, and they're symmetrical. Neither computer can
resolve the name of the other to an address.

Name resolution is a level below security settings, excepting maybe
restrictanonymous. And the latter has been dismissed. 8-(
