Can't view workgroup on SVR 2k3 and XP pro network.

G

Guest

I have been working on this problem for some time.
Chuck's website is great, but I just can't figure
out what to do next. Please someone help.

I run SVR 2k3 sp1 and XP SP2. We are running in workgroups.

-Firewall disabled
-Computer Browser Service disabled on workstation.
-Enabled NetBios over TCP/IP
-Anonymous Access set to 0 on both machines.
-Running only Symantec Antivirus Corp 10.0
-Same Admin account on all machines with same password.
-Simple File Sharing unchecked
-I can map a drive to NRCCE-MGMT
-I can use \\computername\share from Run.

Everything to me looks OK, except when the workstation says
that browsing is not active. What does that mean?
thanks ahead of time for anyhelp.

Chris

Chuck

You've got 2 NBT transports. One reports browsing active, and recognises itself
as the master browser. The other reports browsing NOT active, yet still
recognises itself as the master browser.

Looking at the CDiag logs, I see one major problem. Something that I've
suspected before, in cases like yours. You are running 2 LANs, on each of these
2 computers. The one LAN is where all of the computers are. The other LAN is
how you want to communicate with the other computer. But you're putting both
LANs on the same subnet.
# Create a separate subnet, say 192.168.168/24, and manually assign both Gigabit
adapters to that subnet.
# Setup entries in your LMHosts file (since your DNS servers appear to be
public, I'm guessing DNS / Hosts would be inappropriate here), indicating each
other computer by its Gigabit LAN address.
# Try and avoid creating a bridge between the 2 LANs, on either NRCCE-MGMT or
NRCCEIT001.

Please do let us know how this works for you, both immediately and long term. I
think your case may help a few folks who have posted here.

Chuck,
Thanks for the help. I didn't realize that Nic problem. All I need to do was
disable the other card. I was not really using it and didn't know why it was
plugged up in the first place. Problem is all fixed. thanks again.

That's great, Chris. Thanks for letting us know. Glad it was so easily fixed,
once you realised what had to be done.
