Home Networking Difficulties

Guest

Hi,
I am running Win XP Home Ver 2002 SP2 on a desktop and a wireless laptop. I
am using a D-Link wireless router which is wired to the desktop. I can
access the internet from both computers. I want to be able to file/print
share both computers.

From the desktop, under the workgroup I can see both computers, but when I
click on the laptop, I get the following error:
"\\Kitchen is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions. The network path was not found."
I cannot ping the laptop from the desktop.

From the laptop, I can only the see laptop under the workgroup. However,
somehow I am able to access a shared folder on my desktop using the IP
address (can't remember how I did this). I can ping the desktop from the
laptop.

I have disabled the Windows Firewall on both computers but am running a
firewall provided by my cable internet supplier. I have been reading some of
the newsgroups and the PChuck website. Following are the ipconfig, browstat,
and Cdiag for both computers.

I hope that I haven't provided too much information. Thanks in advance for
any help/direction that I should try.

Hi,
I am running Win XP Home Ver 2002 SP2 on a desktop and a wireless laptop. I
am using a D-Link wireless router which is wired to the desktop. I can
access the internet from both computers.

<SNIP SNIP>

Philip,

A nicely done assembly of the three diagnostic tools, and not at all too much.

I see just two symptoms:
- Office can't access Kitchen (neither ping nor net view, by name or ip address
- further defining your above statement).
- Kitchen can't access the registry on Office from browstat, getting "error =
53" ("name not found").

What is the firewall provided by your ISP, and what computer are you running it
on? I think the problem starts with a firewall.

I'm interested that you have specified your DNS server, from both computers, as
your NAT router. Does the router provide adequate performance as a DNS server?

Both Kitchen and Office are Node Type Unknown, which should use Broadcast for
resolution, so the router DNS server only acts as an Internet address cache.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html>

A firewall is the best possible candidate for this problem.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for the quick post. My ISP provides Shaw Secure which is a
firewall/antivirus suite. It is possibly by F-Secure as far as I can tell.
I am running it on both computers. With regards to the NAT router as my DNS
server, I'm not sure about performance. Is there a better way to specify
this? I don't know what all this stuff does.

I'll look at the pages you suggest and see if it helps at all.

Hi,

I'm trying to resolve the "Node type as unknown". When I go into RegEdit to
the key they specify, I can't find a key called EnableProxy. This is on the
desktop computer OFFICE.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters\
Change the value of the EnableProxy value in the preceding registry key to 0
or 1, quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.

Philip,

Well, the way to resolve that would be to create a new REG_DWORD named
EnableProxy with value = 1. But that's not the solution to your problem,
because Unknown is not a problem.

My hopes is that this would be a simple firewall problem.

If it's not a firewall problem, check for a browser conflict.

Hi Chuck,

I think that it is a firewall problem. I disconnected from the internet and
turned the firewalls off and was able to access files from both computers
from either computer. Where can I find information about what ports,
applications, etc. that need to be enabled to have a functional home network
that is still protected?

Thanks.

Philip,

As far as I know, there isn't one comprehensive website listing all firewalls
and configuration information. The thought of making an article like that has
crossed my mind, but only briefly. There are so many products, and new versions
are published frequently.

If your firewall is by F-Secure, there may be a few possibilities for you.

This is where Help - About is a good place to start. Then, as always, Google
(or Yahoo) is your friend. That's where the above link came from.
