problems saving and previewing

I'm having problems with my Windows movie maker. When I capture video
footage, the first 5 seconds of the preview are fine. After that it staggers.
I never used to have this problem. The second problem occurs while editing
captured video material. As I'm cutting the footage and dropping frames into
the project, it freezes as soon as I go into file and try to save the project
as movie file. It does not display an error message at all but just freezes
and will not move from that stage of editing/ Any ideas about what's wrong
and how I can sort it? Thank you.
